Old Gravesendians vs. Canterbury

On Sunday 5th November Old Gravesendians under 15’s played against a very strong looking Canterbury side. We got down nice and early to do some early training and get ready for a physical game. Captain Jack Gibbs done his best to try and fire us up before leaving to take the toss. Canterbury won the toss so we played down the hill 1st half.
Canterbury started the game with a long kick that was taken by our forwards. The game had a slow build up for what was to come in the 2nd half. The 1st half began with many line-outs and many knockons which was won mainly by Old G’s. In one play centre Aaron Farnell turned up the heat with a thumping dump-tackle on a Canterbury player. The 1st half continued with not many chances for both teams and many more line-outs. The 1st half ended scoreless with either team really threatening to score.
The 2nd half began and a rejuvenated Gees started brightly with wave after wave of attack. We eventually won a scrum deep inside Canterbury’s half. A well takes pick up from the back of the scrum enabled number 8 Jon Cockel to power over to score under the posts. This was easily converted by Jon. Canterbury came back stronger than ever but only a few big scrums and big tackles kept the score 7-0. However this pressure was soon taken off by great running and quick ball up the pitch. The ball was eventually past to Lewis Moss and his excellent pass enabled Centre Aaron Farnell to step a couple of players before out sprinting the Canterbury fullback to dive over the line exuberantly to score under the posts. This was expertly and easily converted by Jon Cockel.
With the game now livening up Canterbury went for broke throwing everything and anything, even punches. But we all kept our heads and managed to play through and managed to kill the game off with another try for Jon Cockel under the post which was easily converted again. Then the match took a turn for the worse when a Canterbury back hair was allegedly pulled and retaliated by throwing punches at Aaron Farnell. The game was immediately stopped and the Canterbury back was lucky to get away with nothing.
As the game continued more incidence occurred with fullback Kacey putting in a massive tackle on a Canterbury forward who didn’t like this and immediately stood up and squared up to Kacey. Kacey managed to just keep his head and walk away. Minutes later the captains were told to keep there team calm and play the game. There was no change and the match ended on a sour note.
Big thanks must go to captain Jack Gibbs for giving a captains performance. Jon Cokel deserves a big thank-you for his brilliant kicking and overall play. Thanks to Jon Everid who came on in the second half for his 1st appearance for the club.
