Old Gravesendians vs. Medway
12 36
On Sunday 15th October Old Gravesendians under 15’s played there 1st game of the season against a very strong Medway under 15 team. Just by looking at Medway warming up we could tell we was in for a hard and physical match. New captain Jack Gibbs won the toss and we kicked off in the first-half.
Captain Jack Gibbs started the game off with a brilliant high drop kick that was knocked on straight away. The forwards lined up for the first scrum of the season which was won quickly and scrum-half Will managed to get the ball out quickly to the backs. This was shipped down the line quickly before being tackled by the Medway backs. Play was even for the first quarter of the 1st half before Medway scored in the corner which was unconverted.
Old G’s bounced back quickly with a great high restart kick from Jack Gibbs gave the forwards time to get to the ball. After a few strong moves from the forwards the ball was taken into contact and recycled quickly and quick ball enabled debutant Joe Cockel to break through and pop the ball to centre Ryan Lockyer to miss pass to winger Ben Harvey to slide into the corner. This was expertly converted from the touch line by Jon Cockel. This gave Gees a 7-5 lead midway through the 1st half. With a couple of minutes left in the 1st half Medway managed to score under the posts which was converted.
The second half kicked off and with the match close Medway winger managed to squeeze down the wing and score under the posts. This was soon converted. Old G’s responded to this by piling on the pressure but all this pressure was soon turned into attack when Medway scored an unconverted try. With time ticking by we knew we had to start getting back into the game. We won a penalty which was picked up quickly and taken quickly by centre Aaron Farnell from the half way line. Aaron managed to weave his way through the Medway defense to score under the posts. This sadly was unconverted by Jon Cockel.
With the game nearly up Jon Cockel injured his hand and was forced off. With this a quick change around saw us piling on the pressure but Medway managed to clear and score under the posts, which was unconverted. With time running out there was still time for Medway to score again a converted try.
Congratulations go to new captain Jack Gibbs who led by example with some brilliant kicking and passing. Extra thanks go to Joe Cockel and Sam Bauckham who both gave great efforts on the debuts. Big thanks also must go Raife Norman who played full-back and put in some big tackles. All-in-all a good day for all the lads that went to take part and everyone watching
